Game Scene week 5

It’s the final week of school before finals. By now, it’s only a few days before the final, and I think I have almost everything done. I successfully imported my maya building into unity and added the rightful textures. This is the final product of my hard work:

I’m not sure why there’s the empty areas there, but other than that, I’m proud I was able to do this! Bringing in the textures was the worst however. My way of naming things weren't so good so I had a lot of problems finding which texture maps goes to which. Luckily I did it! And that’s all that matters.
The last thing I need to do is to work with my group mates on making the presentation and the final maya package. I’m starting to get burned out with all the work I've been doing but I’m going to continue to try my very best to complete this class and this semester the best I can.

UPDATE
The assignment has been completed. I worked hard with my group mates to bring all of our work into Maya and also into Unity, making an entire environment for it. Below, is the presentation we all made. I'm so proud of my work and I really love this!

Game Scene week 4

It’s almost the final week to turn it in. Luckily, I have most of everything finished. I got to UV everything and spent an entire night working on adding the textures on my church. What was one of the problems of adding the textures was finding what kind of main wall would I use. I tried using a somewhat corroded brick wall, but it made the edges from one piece of geometry to another look really off. Instead of that, I had a sorta sandy looking wall that masks the weird edges fairly.

This is the render from maya:

For the front and back of the walls, the weird edges stood out the most and I didn’t know what to really do, so I came up with an idea: add some lines over it, to cover it up. I was planning to texture those lines with a wood texture, but i thought maybe making it out of clay would be the better approach. It makes it more unique and I think it suits it well.

I’m gonnna wait until later to work on implementing this into unity; the texturing process was a lot t handle, since I had spent an entire night to work on it. That, and I didn’t have the required unity update. I would need to export this maya project to unity and add some finishing touches.
I’m so close and have a lot more time to work on it! I hope that I can get through this smoothly.

Game Scene week 3

This week, I was able to get some serious work done with modeling my church. I had a lot of problems with using maya this week, as it would just crash randomly, making me lose bits and pieces of work. It was frustrating, but I was able to finish modeling the church.

I got a lot of modeling done and i’ve recently been working heavily on UVing. It looks like I need to UV a ton of things, but really I only need to UV one unique piece of geometry and then just duplicate it over. Though, I do feel like it’ll take a while to do, as I’m struggling with uving the back of the church.
Despite these small setbacks, I do feel that I’m on a good pace to complete my final right! All I need to do is UV, texture, and export it to Unity. Doesn’t sound too bad for now.

Game Scene week 2

Last week, I got only a little bit done, which was rather disappointing. This week however, I really did get a whole lot done. I made more objects and different aspects of the home and started to put them together. This is my work as of now.

I made my walls more on the straighter side, which made it look a bit bland, so I'm currently working on adding bevels and extracting the bottom of one of the duplicates, eventually replacing all the walls. My only issue with this is organization and the new way of UVing things. I have more space to move things around, but I'm not sure exactly what to do, other than trying to UV like normal.

also, There's a lot of objects here and it's looking messing in my outliner. I need to work on trying to get more organized. I also have to work on finishing designing and UVing the new walls, then some other UVing. Once that's done, I'll model the rest of the house. I'm planning to have everything modeled before I come back to class after the thanksgiving break.

Game Scene week 1

For this week, I worked on blocking out my reference image that I'm working on recreating.
I'm now tasked to create a building through planer modeling. My blocked out reference image looks like this:

However, after this, I only created a single tile of the wall containing a window of it. I only had that through making a plane and using the extrude tool to create a window. I also managed to UV it. Luckily for this assignment, I only need to technically model a few things, since the rest would be duplicates.
I'm still really slow with working with Maya, but I hope that next week, I'll pick up the pase.

This is my work so far. I can put them together side by side and continue to copy and paste, then I can be able to form a bigger wall!

Living Room Final Week

After five weeks of working on this assignment, I finally finished it to the best of my abilities.

the whole process is starting to become almost second nature for me. I've gotten much better with modeling and also adding textures to things. That being said, I still feel that my lowest point is uving objects. I've been having lots of troubles with uving things like both entertainment centers and the sofa. Beveling things does also make it harder to uv successfully.

I was able to make things that I struggled a lot with in the past more easily now. It didn't take me much to model the sofa, unlike the sofa and table assignment.

I found out that I don't need to work on every single angle of an object. If a part of an object isn't gonna be seen at all, then there's no need to have it in the scene. It'll just mean extra work; mixing that with Uving and that'll trigger a lot of underlying issues. Faces that I don't need can be easily deleted or left untextured.

I got to learn so much more about maya thanks to this assignment, and I hope to increase my skills as I go on. I'll try that by practicing modeling new things, while really trying to understand uving and how to effectively use it.

Living room Week 4

For this week, I unfortunately didn’t make too much progress, but I feel that I’m close to being finished. I changed up a mustard bottle from my grocery assignment into an orange soda bottle with some soda in it. I also added colors onto the lamp, while also making it into a light source.

Also, with my tv, I learned how to make it shine. It’s all about duplicating the screen and manipulating it to be able to shine bright, while also having the original screen still visible. I felt really proud about this, but one of the most notable changes is the second entertainment center. I completely changed it because the old one was made off of the top of my head, when I was still learning about the extrude tool.
I got a reference of an entertainment center that I used to create my own. I added some of my own ideas into it, one being to have it not have any mini walls inside of it.

Despite all of this, I still have more to do before I'm finished. I need to texture the sofa, entertainment center shelf, and the picture frames. I have my pizza box textured but I think I lost it somewhere. I’d need to find it. But It’s almost finished and I’m getting more excited to see the finished product.

Living Room Week 3

I was able to get a lot of work done, but I had a large amount of problems I had to face. So far, here is my work as of now:

At home, I had textured a number of things: the floor, table, carpet, entertainment center, and TV. I also made the different walls its own object and was able to change them individually, while also making all of them the same color.

I added some things from my past assignment, that being the grocery assignment. I’m planning on filling the entire shelf with smores pop tarts. I’m only doing that because it’s funny to see someone has that much on display.

When starting to do the work in class, I wasn’t able to get my textures in view for some odd reason. I’m worried that all of my work was deleted. I’m not entirely sure right now, but I ‘m gonna plan this week to UV more things while also trying to finalize things.

CAGD 230 Living Room week 2

Currently, i'm now reaching the halfway mark on this assignment. Right now, I'm still modeling things, but I'm becoming a whole lot better when it comes to modeling. I got to work on making many low poly models of the couch, TV, entertainment center, and others, all thanks to extruding objects.

Here's my current process as of Thursday October 17th, 2019 (prior to work time in class)

My main problem so far is not knowing what else I should add to fill up space. I can think of small things like lamps and food at least, but the empty spot on the wall is a little too empty. Maybe I should add photos on it, but I'm not too sure.

I used two YouTube videos to help me with making the sofa and the tv. Surprisingly, making the TV was by far the most easiest thing i have ever done in this class so far. I was truly amazed by how quick and easy I made it.

As for the poly count, I'm only at a fraction of the limit. I'm able to do that by beveling objects, extruding, and completely avoiding the 3 hotkey that curves things because that makes the poly count skyrocket. Hopefully, I'll keep this up and not make it to 50,000. I know I can.

For this day and the rest of the week, I plan to finish adding things and then UV some objects. I feel I should focus on the main parts of the living room, then work on small things once i'm done. I'm very confident that I can manage to UV most of it by next Tuesday.

CAGD 230 living room Week 1

This is the start of my living room project, where I have to create an entire living room in Maya. The concept arts I will be using for this assignment is shown below:

I'm working on the layout based off of the first one, but I'm planning to change the sofa into something of my own, while adding the shelf I made from my grocery assignment into it. I'm not sure what kind of entertainment system I'll make but I might stick with the type that's shown in concept art 2.

Object list (so far):
1. sofa/couch
2. entertainment center
3. rug
4. table
5. shelf, two doors
I plan on adding a lamp, more areas to store things, and windows or frames

CAGD 230 grocery shelf

This is the point in the semester where assignments are getting a bit more challenging. For this assignment, I needed to make a grocery shelf, filled with various kinds of grocery items. There was a list of how many types of items should be apart of the shelf:

  1. 6 different types of boxed  groceries
  2. 1 plastic item
  3. 2 glass items

This was the final rendered images of the assignment:

I didn’t know what I should really make, but I ultimately decided on random stuff that I could think of that I liked. The popcorn and pop tarts were my favorite out of the two. I made the shelf a bit too big so I devoted the entire top shelf to smores pop tarts.

A problem with the shelf is that It really doesn’t look like a grocery shelf. Not at all. I should’ve used a different texture for it or an overall redesign of it entirely. I also noticed some lighting problem at the bottom.

The light shining down there is too much and is making the whole texture shine a white color. Also, I feel there’s a problem with shading between the corn flakes and the wooden shelf. I’m definitely getting marked down for this.

Some ways to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future is that I need to keep track of everything in all angles to make sure that I don’t have anything looking off. And if i do see something wrong, I’ll quickly make edits. I’ll also work on checking light settings in the attribute editor to change some settings in regards to shadows and light in order to make things more natural looking

CAGD 230 Dinner prep

I was given this assignment almost right away after the table and sofa assignment. For this, I had to model a box of pasta, a jar, and add textures to a wine bottle. I also had to do the same with the pasta box and jar, plus UVing them both. Luckily, the wine bottle was already UVed and ready for texturing.

Being upset about the last assignment, I blew through this assignment and managed to complete the entire thing within a day. Luckily for me, there were short tutorials given that shows exactly what to do and how to do it, so I sat down and worked non stop. This is one of the rendered images I took

I had a large problem with trying to make the jar of tomato sauce. The sauce was for some reason still white, despite adding the right texture to it. I struggled with trying to find a solution, I needed help from my professor. That’s when I found out it was a simple fix: I didn’t have any UVs on that object. No UVs means no textures, even if you assigned one to an object.

That goes to show that sometimes, the problems we have in just about anything we do can have very simple solutions to it. Once I had that out of the way, I went to finished rendering and making two other shots, being able to turn it in.

Overall, my favorite thing about this assignment was the wine bottle. My texture for the wine bottle is one of my favorites. I picked out that label via google, and I’m proud of how it turned out.

Some lessons can be learned from this assignment: I can finish a large amount of work if given the time, a lot of the time, some issues can be resolved easily so that means to not overthink things too deeply, and that I’m starting to understand the process more and more as I work on these projects. I’m slowly getting better and better!

Here are the final two renders:

CAGD 230 Table and Couch

For this assignment, I was tasked to model a table and a couch in Maya. I had to then UV it to be able to add textures into it, and then render the two. Unfortunately,  I wasn't able to finish in time.

This is the only render I have of the assignment. I was easily able to make the chair and I tried to work on the sofa myself. It took a real long time to be able to do it, but I managed to finish it. I then UVed both models and decided to work on adding the textures in class. However, things didn’t go as planned.

I ended up not UVing my sofa right, so I had to redo it. At the time, I wasn’t used to the UV editor so it took a long time to be able to UV it. I also forgot how to add textures and I spent my time trying to work as fast as I could, but I wasn’t able to add textures, didn’t have the UVs completely done, and the background was black, which is a bad thing.

The main problem was that I underestimated the time I had because I was still a beginner with the process. I should’ve continued to work on it the day before the due date to be able to have either 99% of it done, or all of it done right then and there. I also should’ve practiced and took more detailed notes on how to UV and add textures onto a model. Had I knew more about the process, I would’ve had little to no problems.

It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t able to finish. I’m hoping this doesn’t bring my grade down. I’ll try my best in the future to understand the final steps and time management.

CAGD 230: Marker

Soon after the first assignment was completed, we quickly moved along to the next assignment: creating a model of a marker. There was a playlist of a tutorial one of the teachers made all for making a marker. The goal was to follow the steps of making a marker and turn in rendered images of it, along with the maya file.

I got to learn a lot about new things you can do with Maya. You can be able to manipulate the edges of shapes with edge loops, ready a model for texturing through UVing the , making a 2D color spreadsheet for the model in photoshop, and apply it to the model in Maya. With all of that useful information/resources, I was able to finish my marker:

The process of creating a marker wasn’t that difficult, but I followed along mostly confused. I did however slowly got to understand the process. The first step was to add a reference image into the maya scene by going to create - free image plane. You’ll be able to work on forming objects to look more like the reference, which is perfectly fair game. Even professionals work in that sort of way.

What I used to change the shape of some of the objects was edge loops. By selecting the image and going to mesh tools - create edge loop. Then you can go to one of the horizontal or vertical edges for it to create the edge loop. Edge loops give the object more depth and when selected, you’re able to move it around, which can change the formation of the object where that edge loop is at. I could stretch it out, or condense it, which gave me that curve closer to the tip of the pen, being able to manipulate the shape to my will. Once I got the shape together, I went through a process called UV. To UV an object, you manipulate shapes that represent the 3D model in a 2D plane. The goal is to mold the shape to where they can be placed together in a certain way for it to be ready to be imported to photoshop to place a texture on it.

I was told that I can do whatever with the texture, so I decided to bring in one of my drawings I made of an original character I have. I then thought instead of adding my name onto the pen, I added to add my oc’s name instead.

In the end, once I finished everything, added a render backdrop to keep the background grey, I was able to finish this assignment. Since I added my oc into it, I felt more proud as ever with what I did. Despite it being a real pain to understand UVing and also managing to try and understand the ins and outs of maya more, I’m steadying learning even more and with more practice, I bet I can master this!

Here are some more rendered images of the marker, including the drawing of my oc:
